Triathlon athlete Andy Wibowo battled in Bali

Triathlon athlete Andy Wibowo battled in Bali - thejakartapost.com - A total of 1,347 participants, including 897 triathletes and 450 runners, competed in the triathlon race, which is now in its seventh year. The largest number of participants came from Indonesia (403), Australia (74), the UK (29), Singapore (21), US (17) and France (16)

Indonesian triathlon athlete Andy Wibowo battled the chaotic traffic of southern Bali but had to be content with second place behind Michal Bucek of Slovakia in the Biznet Bali International Triathlon on Sunday. Andy recorded a time of 2 hours, 21 minutes and 30 seconds in the individual Olympic distance category, which involved competing in a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 km bike ride and 10 km run.

Bucek registered the best time of 2:07:43 to win the event, while third place went to Assad Attamimi of Australia in 2:23:25.

“The traffic was crowded after the McDonalds junction and I was a bit less careful in getting through that road. I once thought about stopping [for goods], but I decided I must go on because reaching the podium in this event has been one of my main targets this year,” said the 33 year old, who said he had prepared for the event since last year.

The former national swimmer, who was a qualifier in the 2004 Athens Olympics, led the 1.5 km swim race in 22 minutes and 4 seconds, while coming 12th in the 40-km bike race (1 hour, 11 minutes, 14 seconds) and fourth in the running race (45 minutes, 46 seconds).

“The bike race was stuck in traffic jams at at least two traffic lights on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai. Most cyclists were stopped and some even jumped over the road separator to continue biking in the other lane. Extra security measures are required,” said Richard, suggesting that next year’s event may need to consider using the new toll road as a bike route.

“We had to control the traffic for the cycling course because there are so many cars and motorbikes. They need to make more space, so that it is safer for the participants,” agreed second-place winner in the 50-54 age group, Tom Aaker, who is also chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Indonesia.
