Denpasar: A team of researchers from Udayana University has come up with Feb. 27, 1788 as the foundation date of Denpasar city, based on 2010 research on the Badung kingdom.
“Based on historical findings, we found that Denpasar was established in the year 1788. However, the date and month were not discovered, so we recommended using the date and month set in a Home Ministry
letter,” said Udayana University researcher Anak Agung Bagus Wirawan, in a seminar on the historical search for the birthday of Denpasar on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
The Denpasar anniversary has been celebrated every Feb. 27 since 1992 based on the letter. Wirawan, who is chairman of Udayana University’s Cultural Studies, said that the year 1992 should be replaced with 1788, which indicates the establishment of the central government of the Kingdom of Badung.
Denpasar Mayor Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra said that the researchers’ discovery made Denpasar a heritage city. “Such an ancient heritage helps Denpasar city to discover its soul and should bring a positive impact for society and the government.”
